Long-time readers of this site may remember Alan Bate, who we met in a guesthouse in Malaysia back in 2008. In an interview for our podcast series, Alan told us how he dreamed of breaking the record for fastest-round-the-world by bicycle, taking a significant margin off of Mark Beaumont’s time. He’s had some delays since then, but Alan will now set off on March 31st from Bangkok. [more]

The hardest part of doing a bike tour is getting out the front door. There’s always a ‘but’ that seems to be stopping you from actually following through on your dreams. But I’m not fit enough. But I’m scared. But I don’t have the money. We’re here to tell you that there’s always a but. And it’s never the ‘right time’ to just get up and go. [more]

American Willie Weir is well known in bike touring circles for the books and articles he writes about his travels by bicycle. The BikingBis blog recently caught up with Willie at a bike fair in Seattle and asked him two questions: What’s your favorite place for bicycle touring, and where would you ride your bike if you only had a week? Willie’s answers are surprising and full of enthusiasm for bike touring. [more]

There are few products in this world more versatile than duct tape. No bike tourist should be caught without at least a few feet of it to use in emergencies. We’ve compiled 10 Reasons To Bike Tour With Duct Tape and we’d love to hear what other tips and duct tape stories you can add to the list. Read more in our [more]

A big thanks to everyone who turned up at a London pub on Tuesday for a beer and a chat. We were amazed at how many people came out for the evening. It was so inspiring to hear about trips just finished and new ones about to start. Our only regret was that we didn’t have time to talk with everyone. Instead, we’re extending an offer of beer and Dutch apple cake to anyone who lives in Holland or happens to be coming through and wants to meet up. [more]

The Canadian city of Toronto doesn?t have a reputation as a bike touring destination. Most cyclists head west to the majestic Rocky Mountains or east to the fishing villages and rolling hills of Quebec. But Toronto native Allan Stokell ? a keen bike tourist and owner of the [more]

We’ve taken another step towards the ‘pampered’ end of bike touring. After 3 years of sleeping on a “pillow” of scrunched up clothes, we’ve finally splurged on the real thing: a Thermarest Compressible Pillow ($22.95 from REI). The catalyst came from a recent restless night in our tent. We packed lightly for a weekend trip but then didn’t have enough clothes to shove under our heads to make a good enough pillow. [more]

We’ve been following the travels of Eric & Amaya for a few months now – a couple who have been on the road for several years and are currently in South America. There’s not much we haven’t read on their World Biking website (a wonderful mix of diary entries and practical bike touring advice) but today we discovered something new: video interviews with bike tourists they meet. by Velaia In 2006, Marija Kozin left her home in Slovenia and set out for China by bicycle. When she reached Beijing, Marija turned around and cycled home again. During her 30 month trip, she covered some of the toughest routes in the world of bike touring, including going across Tibet and tackling the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan. In this podcast, we talk to Marija about the highlights of her trip and some of the more difficult parts of her journey, including coming home. [more]

The rims of your bike’s wheels are one of the more likely things you’ll have to replace – possibly during a tour. To save difficulties during your bike trip, make sure your rims are in good shape before you set out. In this week’s Ask-A-Mechanic, Paul Gibson of British framebuilders Ellis Briggs dishes out information on how to tell if your rims might need replacing soon and how to make them last longer. [more]
